Learning vs. Implementing

Hey Reader,

If you’ve been eying the B2S Conference but you’re still deciding between the conference-only and Conference + Collab options, here’s a helpful way to think about it.

In school-based OT, the hardest part isn’t learning new ideas.

It’s the years-long knowledge-to-translation gap

Evidence-based strategies are everywhere, even on Instagram, but turning them into something that works inside your real caseload, your real campus, and your real OT team takes ongoing support.

If you want the sessions, the recordings, and the professional development hours, choose the conference-only option.

It’s a great fit if your main goal is to learn from the B2S presenters, get energized, and leave with research-backed ideas you can start exploring.

On the flip side, if you know you’ll want help closing that knowledge-to-translation gap once the school year gets moving (especially after the back-to-school momentum fades in October), choose the Conference + Collab option.

Because after the conference, as you try to apply what you learned, that’s when the real questions show up in your actual context, like:

  • “I understand MTSS now, but please help me draft this email to them without sounding like I’m asking them to do more work?”
  • “My admin approved a sensory budget… Help me decide what I should actually prioritize for my campus?”
  • “Would someone mind looking at this (redacted) eval and helping me make it more inclusive and child-centered?”

That’s where the Collab makes an impact.

The B2S Conference is the spark and the foundation. It is really, REALLY, good CEU content.

The Conference + Collab option, though, is what helps you translate great ideas into day-to-day practice through questions, feedback, and real-time problem-solving with other school-based OT practitioners throughout the year.

Both are valid options. The question is how much support you want after the weekend ends.

Choose your B2S option

Until next time,

👋 Jayson

Hey Reader, I'm curious, which session are you most excited for at the Back to School Conference? Hit reply and let me know! Is it Dr. Moira Bushell on MTSS because you are trying to support more students without burning out? Is it Dr. Colleen Cameron Whiting on ASI because sensory integration remains one of the most difficult interventions to implement with fidelity in schools? Perhaps it's Elisa Wern's session on AI and AT because you want tools that help rather than distract? Or maybe it's...

Hi Reader, I hate to admit this, but early in my school-based OT career, I flat out missed IEP-required consultation minutes. While I’d often blamed this on my high caseloads, I was lying to myself. The truth was, I didn’t feel effective when providing consults. I knew collaboration with teachers mattered.I knew the minutes were on the IEP and required. And I knew asking, "How's Mike doing?" wasn't enough. But I didn't know where to take the conversation beyond that, how to make it useful for...
