OT Knowledge ➡️ OT Practice

Presented by the
OT Schoolhouse Collaborative

Hey Reader,

Let’s be real for a second. Learning evidence-based practices in OT has never been easier.

At the OT Schoolhouse alone, we’ve published over 220 hours of audio and video courses on school-based OT, much of it for free!

But here’s the catch: while acquiring knowledge is simple, putting it into practice is a whole different game.

How many times have you left a PD course bursting with ideas, only to find yourself struggling to implement them?

Why is it so challenging to implement new practices we’re excited about?

The answer is simple: we often lack a solid plan for implementation.

We assume that what we learn automatically translates to practice, but as OT practitioners, we should know better. Habits and routines are tough to break.

That’s why, on today’s episode of the OT Schoolhouse Podcast, we’re chatting with Dr. Taylor Poirier, OTR/L, about her method for implementing what she learns.

Taylor’s approach is straightforward:

  1. Consume knowledge purposefully
  2. Apply knowledge immediately (even if it leads to mistakes that help you learn)
  3. Seek additional knowledge on topics that spark your interest
  4. Engage and collaborate with others to reinforce learning

Curious to learn more about how Taylor quickly implements insights from the OT Schoolhouse Podcast? Check out episode 159 of the OT Schoolhouse Podcast.

Have you ever felt like it is impossible to implement the knowledge you learn from PD courses?

In this episode, Taylor Poirier shares how she implements what she learns from listening to the OT Schoolhouse podcast.

Tune in to discover the actionable steps she took, the resources she utilized, and the challenges she navigated to become a dynamic force in school-based occupational therapy.

Don’t just learn. Implement what you learn with support from me and 200 other OT practitioners.

Join the OT Schoolhouse Collaborative and break free from the cycle of attending courses without seeing real change in your practice.

Our community offers over 12 hours of AOTA-approved professional development each year, along with mentorship meetings designed to help you put your ideas into action.

Transitioning to Updated Assessment Tools in School-Based OT

As school-based occupational OT practitioners, we rely on a variety of tools to assess our students’ needs and guide our interventions.

But what are we to do when the tools we use are updated and revamped?

LAST WORD 👋
17 years from research to practice.

There is an understanding in the therapy world that it takes 17 years for research to make its way into practice.

I used to think this delay was primarily a result of lack of information getting from the research articles to the practitioners. But the more I learn, the more I think the delay is also caused by the inability of practitioners to implement the research they are already aware of.

As we discussed today, learning best practices is one thing, but it is not enough. We must also implement those best practices.

If you’d like support implementing best practices, I would love for you to join us inside the OT Schoolhouse Collaborative, where we support one another in implementing best practices every day.

Her teaching background gives her a unique perspective on creating environments that work for...
